European Molecular Biology Laboratory offers Diploma/Master studentship in the field of life sciences, chemistry, physics or engineering, Germany
Scholarship Description: Many biological environments (e.g. soil, human gut, etc,) are inhabited by complex heterogeneous populations of diverse species. In fact, even in the human body, bacteria and unicellular organisms outnumber the human cells. Unfortunately, only a fraction of them can be isolated and cultivated for which reason the analysis of their genotypes and phenotypes remains extremely difficult. The aim of this project is the characterization and sequencing of individual cells from diverse populations using droplet-based microfluidics. Cells will be encapsulated into individual droplets of a water-in-oil emulsion, sorted according to their phenotype (e.g. an enzymatic activity) and analysed (e.g. by sequencing or qPCR) on the micro scale.
Study Subject(s):Single-cell Metagenomics using Droplet-based Microfluidics
