Scholarship Description: Many biological environments (e.g. soil, human gut, etc,) are inhabited by complex heterogeneous populations of diverse species. In fact, even in the human body, bacteria and unicellular organisms outnumber the human cells. Unfortunately, only a fraction of them can be isolated and cultivated for which reason the analysis of their genotypes and phenotypes remains extremely difficult. The aim of this project is the characterization and sequencing of individual cells from diverse populations using droplet-based microfluidics. Cells will be encapsulated into individual droplets of a water-in-oil emulsion, sorted according to their phenotype (e.g. an enzymatic activity) and analysed (e.g. by sequencing or qPCR) on the micro scale.

We use automated time-lapse microscopy of cells expressing fluorescent reporters to measure signaling processes with high temporal resolution. We use the p53 and TGF? networks as paradigms to investigate how the architecture of signaling networks shape their dynamic response and how distinct signaling pathways interact to determine cellular decisions. Scholarship Description:Mechanical factors play an important role in many basic biological phenomena on different spatial-temporal scales: from tissues and single cells to sub-cellular structures. The ability of cells to appropriately sense, process and utilize mechanical energy and signals is essential for the normal function of the entire organism. A number of severe disease, such as Cancer and Progeria, is known to be related to altered mechanical properties of the cellular matter. To reveal the mechanisms behind the observed mechanobiological phenomena, we develop novel approaches to quantitative analysis of cellular mechanics using a 3D image- and model-based framework.
Within the scope of the ongoing multidisciplinary project, the relationship between genotype and mechanical phenotype of the cell will be systematically investigated by means of the high-throughput screening of mechanical properties of RNAi-knockdowns. Successful candidate will be given the opportunity to carry out a state-of-the-art research work on an emerging, high-impact area of science between molecular biology, bioinformatics and biophysics. Work will be carried out in the division of Prof. Roland Eils within BioQuant, the Center for “Quantitative Analysis of Molecular and Cellular Biosystems” at Heidelberg University.

Scholarship Description: IJP are offering for the eighth time a travel and work fellowship for up to five young journalists from the Middle East, especially from Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Israel and Palestine to spend a two-month period in Germany. We are doing this in cooperation with governmental institutions, foundations and sponsors in Germany and the Middle East. At the same time, the fellowship is being offered to journalists in Germany, who can apply to spend a two-month period in the Middle East.
The fellowship is intended to enable young journalists to familiarise themselves with the political issues in Germany at an early stage of their career. This will raise awareness of aspects of relations between Germany and the Middle Eastern region in future multipliers and will give them a personal insight into mentality, culture and everyday life in Germany and the European Union.
The practical part of the fellowship ensures contact with colleagues in the region, and it is hoped this contact will be maintained in future years. This is also the intention of future alumni reunions in Berlin.
Eligibility Criteria: Applications may be submitted by any citizen of the countries mentioned above aged 21 or over who is working as a regular employee, trainee or journalist, for media. The maximum age is 37 years.
The fellowship carries a payment of 4,000 euro per person. This sum is intended to cover a large proportion of the travel costs, board and lodging. Fellows are expected to contribute a certain amount themselves. There will be no payment for the individual’s work on location as a journalist.

Scholarship Description:Adjuvant therapy with tamoxifen reduces the risk of recurrence and prolongs survival after diagnosis of oestrogen receptor–positive breast cancer. However, 30% to 50% of patients with adjuvant therapy experience relapses or die. There is recent evidence that response to treatment is considerably influenced by intrinsic host factors. To identify genetic variants that may predict disease outcome, we have genotyped genetic variants in candidate genes involved in cellular processes related to tamoxifen action in breast cancer patients with and without tamoxifen monotherapy.
Tailored statistical methods to identify genetic predictors of response to therapy with tamoxifen will be developed in this project in collaboration with PD Dr. Justo Lorenzo Bermejo, Institute of Medical Biometry and Informatics, University Hospital Heidelberg. Methodological improvements will focus on the robustification of standard methods for the statistical analysis of genetic data, for example, robust multiple imputation based on public data repositories and robust survival analysis. The gained knowledge should contribute to the refinement of breast cancer treatment.
The successful candidate will have the possibility to work at the interface of genetics and statistics and will gain substantial experience in both the practical analysis of genetic data and the development of novel statistical techniques.Ihr Profil: We are looking for a highly motivated, well qualified statistician, mathematician, molecular biologist, geneticist or epidemiologist, ideally with practical experience in SAS and/or R. This programme is designed to further qualify future leaders in politics, law, economics andadministration according to the principles of Good Governance and to prepare them in a praxis-oriented course for their professional life. The programme offers very good graduates with a first university degree the chance to obtain a Master’s degree in disciplines that are of special relevance for the social, political and economic development of their home country. With the knowledge and experience acquired in Germany the scholarship holders should later contribute to the establishment of democratically oriented economic and social systems aimed at overcoming social tensions. In addition, the training at German institutions of higher education should especially qualify the scholarship holders as partners in political and economic cooperation with Germany. With this programme, DAAD intends to contribute to the support of Good Governance and civil society structures in selected partner countries and regions.

Who can apply?
The scholarship scheme is open to candidates from Africa, Latin America, South Asia, Southeast Asia as well as from countries in the Middle East.

Target group
Very well qualified graduates with a first university degree (Bachelor or equivalent) who in the future want to actively contribute to the social and economic development of their home countries. The scholarships are offered both for young graduates without professional experience and for mid-career professionals.

What is fundable?
The scholarships are for Master courses at a German institution of higher education. The successful candidates will study on one of the selected Master courses listed below. The courses have aninternational orientation and are taught in German and/or English.

The scholarship holders will study in groups and be offered special tutoring at their host institutions. Furthermore, there is the possibility of networking events for participants in different courses and their attendance at tailor-made summer-schools.

Before taking up their Master studies the scholarship holders will be placed on German courses in Germany for normally 6 months (this also applies to scholarship holders in Master courses taught in English).

DAAD pays a monthly scholarship rate of currently 750 €. The scholarship also includes contributions to health insurance in Germany. In addition, DAAD grants an appropriate travel allowance as well as a study and research subsidy and in applicable cases rent subsidies and / or family allowances.

Selection
In addition to the study results achieved so far, the main criterion for selection is a convincing description of the subject-related and personal motivation for the study project in Germany and the expected benefit after the return to the home country.

For Master courses taught in German or in German and English, good knowledge of German (ideally at completed A 2 level at the time of application) is an advantage for being able to pass the German language test required for admission to the Master programme at the end of the six-month preparatory German course. For courses taught in English, proof of good knowledge of English (generally a minimum of 550 TOEFL scores or equivalent) is required.

The university degree should have been obtained during the six years before the application for the scholarship. Applicants cannot be considered if they have been in Germany for more than one year at the time of application.

All Master courses have further additional requirements that must be fulfilled by the applicants at any case.

Scholarship Description: For the scholarship programme 1 of KAAD you can apply if you: come from a developing or emerging country in Africa, Asia, the Middle East or Latin America, have a university degree and professional experience from your home country, want to acquire a master’s degree or a PhD at a German university or do a post-doctoral research project (2-6 months for established university lecturers) at a German university, are a Catholic Christian (or general belong to a Christian denomination). Candidates from other religions can apply if they are proposed by Catholic partners and can prove their commitment to interreligious dialogue, possess German language skills before starting the studies (KAAD can provide a language course of max. 6 months in Germany).
KAAD is working with focus- and partner countries in your region. There are so-called Partner Committees in these countries and applications are channelled via them. Applications from other countries can be considered only in exceptional cases. The orientation of your studies or research towards permanent reintegration in your home region (otherwise the scholarship is turned into a loan), Religious and social commitment (activities) and willingness to inter-religious dialogue.

The International PhD Program “Democracy, Knowledge, and Gender in a Transnational World” (IPP Transnational)

The Faculty of the Social Sciences at the Goethe University counts among those in the Federal Republic of Germany with a wealth of tradition and diversity in teaching and research perspectives. For its duration through the end of 2013, its international PhD program “Democracy, Knowledge, and Gender in a Transnational World,” in short IPP Transnational, will be supported through funding the Faculty procured in 2010 within the scope of the DAAD call for submissions “International Promovieren in Deutschland” (IPID). The implementation of the program substantially profits from the expertise of the International Postgraduate Center Social Sciences (IPC), which houses the IPP Transnational and whose funding and supervisory structure ideally complements its range of offers.

The program admits thirty PhD candidates a year. In terms of content, the IPP Transnational’s profile connects three thematic fields that combine central research issues of the 21st century. Emphasis is placed on the interrelation between current transnational social transformations and the development of democracy, the (re)formation of the gender order, as well as bioscientific findings and practices. In the IPP’s lecture series, the Forum Transnational, renowned scholars present and discuss their most recent work on topics and concepts related to the IPP’s thematic fields.

An international call for applications to the IPP Transnational program is issued twice a year for the admission of fifteen PhD candidates per term on February 15 and July 15. Interviews to assess an applicant’s suitability take place one month before the admission deadlines. Candidate can receive an allowance toward the cost of their trip to the interview. If accepted into the PhD program, the selected candidates are given the status of “conditional admission” to the Faculty of the Social Sciences. Unrestricted acceptance as a PhD candidate should occur by the next possible deadline, i.e., April 1 or October 1. The period between acceptance into the PhD program and acceptance into the Faculty is used to revise the submitted PhD proposal, in particular with respect to the work and time schedule; decide on a first and, if possible, second supervisor of the PhD thesis; and to conclude a PhD agreement that identifies the rights and obligations between supervisors, candidates, and those in charge of the program during the doctoral phase.

Application Requirements
Graduates of sociology, political science and anthropology both from Germany and abroad can apply who have an above-average university degree (MA, first state examination, diploma, or the like) and a sound knowledge of English and whose dissertation project ties in with the IPP Transnational’s research themes.

Application Documents
A complete application consists of the following:

• a five-page dissertation project proposal in German or English in line with the IPP Transnational’s research profile. The proposal shall contain information about the state of research in the selected theme, about the project’s research question derived therefrom, about the steps to be taken to deal with the research question, as well as about the theme’s embeddedness in theory and the selection of the method to be applied
• two letters of reference
• a brief letter of motivation
• a copy of the university degree entitling the candidate to earn a PhD
• a CV

Scholarship Description:The European PhD Program in Computational Logic (EPCL) is run jointly by four of the leading European universities in the field:
•Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (Italy),
•Technische Universität Dresden (Germany),
•Technische Universität Wien (Austria), and
•Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Portugal).
Further international universities, research organizations and enterprises which contribute to Computational Logic or apply results from it are involved as associated partners: The Simon Fraser University (Canada), the Universidad de Chile, the National ICT Australia Limited (NICTA), and several companies. The program involves three years of PhD study in at least two of the European partner universities. It leads to a joint doctoral degree of the partner universities at which the studies have been physically performed. The language of the program is English. Financial support is available in the form of positions and scholarships.
Necessary requirements for participation in EPCL are a Master’s degree in Computer Science or Mathematics, or an equivalent degree; the proof of adequate knowledge of English; and substantial knowledge in the areas Foundations of Logics, Foundations of Artificial Intelligence and Declarative Programming.
