Utrecht University offers PhD Position in the Faculty of Humanities in Acquisition of Prosodic Encoding of Focus Across Languages in Netherlands
Study Subject:Acquisition of Prosodic Encoding of Focus Across Languages
Employer:Utrecht University
Level:PhD
Scholarship Description:The PhD projects are part of the programme “Get the focus right: a cross-linguistic study on prosodic encoding of focus in children”, awarded to Dr. Aoju Chen by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). This programme investigates how 4- to 10-year-olds acquire prosodic encoding of focus in four languages differing sharply in both prosodic realisation of focus and lexical specifications of prosody, i.e. Korean, Swedish, Dutch and Mandarin Chinese. Particular attention will be given to how individuals differ in the rate and route of acquisition and what causes individual differences. The programme aims to develop a comprehensive theory of acquisition of prosodic encoding of focus with an emphasis on language-specificity and individual difference.

The PhD projects aim at a dissertation within a maximum of 3.5 years. They also involve research training, such as graduate courses offered by the National Graduate School in Linguistics (LOT).UIL-OTS features a stimulating, innovative, and internationally oriented research environment which offers opportunities for a broad professional development.
